FreeRTOS

The FreeRTOS project provides a lightweight, real-time operating system for microcontrollers, accompanied by a set of libraries for communicating, analyzing, debugging, and tracing. The FreeRTOS project is distributed under the MIT license.

The FreeRTOS kernel is monolithic and allows real-time applications to be carried out on lightweight platforms, and is available on the majority of commercial platforms/architectures such as STM32, MPS430, V850, SuperH, AT, AVR, Cortex-M, Cortex- A, etc.

Smile & FreeRTOS

Smile integrates FreeRTOS

Smile has extensive experience on all types of microcontrollers, SoCs, SoMs and electronic platforms. Our experts design, carry drivers and more generally BSPs. Smile offers a complete and unique vertical IoT offering. Our smilians know how to design lightweight autonomous connected objects and integrate OS such as FreeRTOS. FreeRTOS is part of the AWS offering. In fact, it is particularly well integrated into the AWS ecosystem. Thus, our engineers design end-to-end Cloud or Edge computing solutions.

The FreeRTOS project was first distributed under a dual GPL license and commercial license including support.

The FreeRTOS project came under the supervision of AWS (Amazon Web Services) in 2017 and has since been distributed under the MIT license.

There are two other business licenses; OpenRTOS and SafeRTOS.

  • The OpenRTOS license includes support and warranty.
  • The SafeRTOS license is a derivative of the FreeRTOS project providing the documentation and tests necessary for certification (IEC 61508, IEC 62304, ISO 26262).
