Smile & Vitam: a long time story
What is the Vitam program?
The Vitam Program is a French interministerial digital archiving program supported by three Ministries, Europe and Foreign Affairs, Culture, and the Armed Forces, which are responsible for preserving the State's archives.
It enables the archiving of a very large volume of data, documents and metadata (a target of several billion objects), for current, intermediate and final archiving, including in a shared context (multi-tenant).
It was designed as a project of innovation and digital transformation of the State, thanks to two key criteria: the Agile method and the publication in open source software.
Smile & Vitam
Smile has been supporting the Vitam program in building this solution since 2016.
This solution presents three major and exciting challenges:
- A high security component is associated with this state project (one audit / certification per major release a year).
- In addition, the re-use of the solution for the greatest number of people is a second fundamental issue: open-source makes this possible and allows the solution to be opened to external contributions.
- Finally, the durability of the platform is crucial, in a context where technologies and formats evolve very quickly: readability of documents several decades after their storage, scalability of the platform... which is a real challenge!
A first version of the solution was released in 2018 and since then Smile has been pursuing its actions via the Continuous Improvement Maintenance, which is constantly evolving the solution (release of one major version per year).
